November, 2014...

...In the late 1980s, just before I started P D Post Productions, Inc. after seven full-time years in 1990, I edited what was probably the easiest of my (at least) 500 original local and national commercials and infomercials since 1983.  The advertising agency was Campbell-Mithun-Esty and the post production house was CinemaVideo Center in downtown Chicago, where I was their chief broadcast and video editor.  What made this commercial the easiest is that the film-to-1” (Type B) transfer of the source footage consisted of only one shot and it was only about a minute long.  The shot was of a group of palm trees next to a shack in a tropical setting at dusk, and one tree had holiday lights that brightened about 30-seconds in.  So, all I literally did was back-time that action to a pre-determined spot on an already mixed audio track.  I also added graphics and a copyright per an always very well laid out storyboard (I edited many of their other well scripted Corona commercials featuring plastic pelicans, couples sitting in beach chairs, etc).  Besides doing all of the technical editing on this one, my only creative contribution was to angle one of their two art card graphics.  But, the dozen-or-so creatives were quite furious with me (they were paying about $500 per hour!) when I returned to the edit suite after angling the graphic from an art card because I did not do it the horizontal way that they had storyboarded it.  I told them that I did so because their font was script and I thought that the angle made the whole commercial look like a personalized holiday card with the Corona logo then looking like a signature.  They told me to put both art card graphics horizontal, the way they had storyboarded it.  So, we finished the edit session and I made a few VHS copies for them to go back to their agency with to review and approve.  A couple of weeks later, they came back with only one revision - to put the art card graphic on an angle exactly the way I originally did!!!  Those commercials (we made both :10 and :30 second versions) were the only ones I edited that still get heavy play during the month of December (it’s now 25 years old) and that art card graphic in the script font that I angled is “Feliz Navid” (click on and scroll down Samples to view the commercial)...

October, 2014...

...P D Post learned of the passing of one of my oldest and most loyal clients in October. For most of the last 25 (my P D Post years) of my 32 total years in the media field, plus the last 3 of my 7 full-time years before that, I was Ed's only phone call and we created many effective, “Success Story” corporate videos for sales, demonstration, new employee orientation and more for a wide variety of companies over the decades used globally on everything from VHS through .MP4 & .M4V for websites and mobile devices. Ed gave me a wonderful recommendation for my P D Post ClientQuote page as well, and we even created a video of our colleague Charlotte Frazier when she passed away in the late ‘90s for her family to keep forever. When Ed moved to Prescott, Arizona in the late ‘90s, he’d still travel to Chicago to edit with me as we collaborated very well together. Ed was very fun and funny to create with, and one of his favorite jokes was “You know how to tell when an editor is lying, don’t you?  His lips are moving!”, to which I would reply with “So, then you already know how to tell when a producer is lying?”. RIP, my good friend and client Ed Stecki.

February, 2014...

...P D Post shot two hours of classroom footage at a Chicago university, which included two presenters and round-table discussion with 10 students.  The footage was shot in 16x9 standard definition to be edited/compressed for use on their YouTube channel.

...P D Post shot footage, on a volunteer basis, at the annual Talent Show of the former grade school of my kids while also running a feed via approximately 300 feet of P D Post video cable from P D Post’s video camera annually mounted to the top of a portable basketball hoop (rolled directly behind the bleachers in the middle of the gym) to the hallway in the back of the stage and projected so that the groups of kids could see what the audience sees while they wait to go onstage themselves.  After both the Friday and Saturday night performances, P D Post ingested the 2-hours per night of 16x9 standard definition footage, superimposed animated graphics with the name of each act (including name and grade of each student) for each of the 40+/- Acts per night.  On Sunday morning, P D Post then uploaded the compressed videos of both the Friday and Saturday performances of each Act (a total of 80+/- 2-minute iTunes/iPhone/iPad/iPod Touch videos) to separate download links, and then created a master link eMail to send to the Talent Show Committee to then forward to all of the parent reps of the Acts to then further forward to all of the parents in their groups and their families and friends.  It was a very large job with an incredibly fast turnaround - the master link eMail was sent before 10am on Sunday, and hundreds of downloads then started immediately.

August, 2013...

...P D Post finished editing a no-budget project that was poorly shot in January and was supposed to be completed for corporate internal use by March, but the project started with one pro bono videographer and another pro bono editor couldn’t complete it creatively or technically after a few months with the footage.  The client was afraid it would have to be entirely re-created, even though the content was still the same, but P D Post took a look at the A- and B-Roll and created an efficient message using a few additional images and several editing tricks from image stabilization through video and audio optimization for a reasonable rate with one-day turnaround.  Hopefully, their “wow” means that they will become a regular P D Post client and not go back to Craigslist again next time!

October, 2012...

...A financial services company hired P D Post to edit a 10-minute video based on a popular reality show in the P D Post Edit Suite, which was played back to open a corporate meeting.  The film style/one-camera shot footage was primarily “L” cut edited and color corrected with a mix of SOT and announcer narration with music and animated graphics created within Final Cut Studio 3.  The client was especially happy with the quality and the fast turnaround.  The footage was shot on a Friday morning, P D Post picked up the camera card files (which were copied to a USB drive) in the afternoon and, on Sunday morning, the client received a complete Version 1 as an approval WMV was uploaded for immediate review.  Well before the final project was due at the end of the business day on Monday, Version 4 was approved and a high-quality version was uploaded to the production company to open Tuesday morning’s corporate meeting.  This fast turnaround is often not possible in-house, but something P D Post often provides in the P D Post Edit Suite.

...Another financial services company hired P D Post to edit a 5-minute, effects-intensive video using Final Cut Pro 7 at their suburban facility.  The client was more than happy with the chroma key and that the final look was more than what was storyboarded and at least as good as what we usually do in Avid and/or After Effects.  The finished video is currently being used for internal communication.
